With the booming export of new energy vehicles in China, the related charging pile supporting facilities have quickly become new business opportunities, which has also attracted overseas charging pile enterprises to compete.
Recently, EnelXWay, a subsidiary of Enel Group, announced its Asia Pacific market business strategy and upgraded its China headquarters in Shanghai in 2019 to an Asia Pacific operations center.
Gianmaria Riccardi, Executive Vice President of Global Sales at Yike Energy, told reporters from First Financial that as Chinese car companies continue to upgrade and accelerate their overseas strategy, they have new demands for local charging infrastructure support, such as high quality control requirements for charging piles, alignment with local regulations and technical standards in markets around the world, and a preference for one-stop service models, These all provide opportunities for the development of Yike Energy in China and other Asia Pacific regions.
In the past two years, China's new energy vehicle exports have continued to explode. According to data from the China Automobile Association, in 2020, China exported nearly 70000 new energy vehicles; In 2021, this number increased to 310000 vehicles; Last year, the export volume of new energy vehicles reached 679000 units. Since last year, Chinese car companies have accelerated their "going global" efforts, with new energy models such as BYD, NIO, Xiaopeng, Dongfeng Junfeng, and Lantu landing in overseas markets.
And the export of charging piles supporting new energy vehicles has also become a new business opportunity. On the one hand, Chinese automobile exports overseas require corresponding home filling piles; On the other hand, the vehicle to pile ratio in the overseas new energy vehicle market is more severe than in the domestic market. According to the research report of Everbright Securities, as of April 2022, the vehicle to pile ratio in the United States was 21.2:1, while the overall vehicle to pile ratio in the European Union was 8.5:1, which also means greater market space. In addition, some overseas car companies may choose to build self operated charging stations overseas to improve charging convenience.
According to the cross-border index of Alibaba International Station, the overseas business opportunities for new energy vehicle charging stations have rapidly increased by 245% in 2022, and there is still nearly three times the demand space in the future.
It is precisely because of the strong demand from overseas that charging stations both domestically and internationally have entered the market to compete for food. In addition to Yike Energy, since 2022, many listed companies in China that are involved in charging pile business have also disclosed their overseas market layout, such as Juhua Technology and Daotong Technology.
However, in the overseas market, overseas company Ruyike Energy has inherent advantages. For example, in the first threshold for going abroad - overseas certification, a management personnel of a charging pile production enterprise stated that compared to the Chinese market, overseas charging pile testing standards and specifications are more strict, and higher requirements are put forward for product safety and performance standards. The above personnel stated that "American standard certification is very difficult to pass, and the threshold for European standard certification is slightly lower
According to a research report by Huatai, currently, the CE certification of EU ICE takes about 3-6 months, and the certification cost is about several hundred thousand yuan; American UL certification takes approximately six months to one year, and the cost can reach millions of yuan.
In addition to certification, charging pile enterprises also need to comply with local laws and regulations when going overseas, as well as understand the local market. These aspects are also advantages for overseas charging pile enterprises, while domestic enterprises are more competitive in terms of cost and manufacturing, the above management personnel added.
Based on its advantages in certification and local services, the reporter learned that Yike Energy's domestic business adopts a model of manufacturing in China and exporting overseas. It not only produces charging piles that meet Chinese standards for the Chinese market domestically, but also exchanges piles that meet European, Southeast Asian, and Pacific standards domestically, meeting the needs of Chinese new energy vehicle companies for supporting household charging piles in overseas markets. In addition, Yike Energy can also provide overseas self operated fast charging stations for Chinese new energy vehicle companies, as well as integrate third-party charging station resources.
Based on their own manufacturing advantages, some domestic charging pile companies have adopted another path to explore overseas markets, which is to cooperate with local enterprises with local service capabilities. For example, in 2022, Shenghong Interstellar exchange piles passed European standard certification and reached cooperation with BP, becoming one of the first charging pile manufacturers to enter the list of BP's Chinese suppliers.
