Since their establishment in 2009, Waymo and Uber have completely changed their travel methods in their respective ways. Now, both parties are collaborating to combine Waymo's leading autonomous driving technology with Uber's large-scale ride hailing service and delivery network.
Later this year, both parties will publicly launch the cooperation services within Waymo's operating area in Phoenix, including local delivery and ride hailing services. Uber users can experience the security and fun of Waymo Driver on Uber and Uber Eats applications. Waymo will invest a certain number of vehicles, and passengers can still call Waymo's vehicles directly through the Waymo One application.
Waymo operates over 180 square miles in Phoenix and is currently the world's largest fully autonomous driving service area. In addition to operating in Phoenix, the company also provides services in San Francisco and is conducting testing in Austin and Los Angeles.
This cooperation also means that the relationship between the two companies has been repaired. In 2017, Waymo sued Uber and its truck autonomous driving company Otto, alleging that Uber and its subsidiaries had stolen their sensor technology. Among them, Anthony Levandowski, one of the founders of Otto, was a former executive of Google's autonomous driving project. Uber agreed to pay Waymo $245 million in stock in 2018 and resolved all lawsuits in February 2022.
In the past year, the two companies have deepened their cooperative relationship. Last June, Uber Freight and Waymo Via announced a long-term strategic partnership that will combine the technology of the two companies and deploy autonomous trucks on a large scale in Uber Freight's freight network.
