In the first quarter of this year, the energy storage market showed high activity, with leading battery companies accelerating a new round of production capacity layout.

In terms of the energy storage bidding market, institutional data shows that the domestic energy storage bidding scale reached 30GWh and 31GWh respectively in January and February this year, including multiple energy storage cell/system centralized procurement bidding projects. The total scale of recruitment and landing in January and February exceeded 70 GWh.

In terms of price, the average bid price for lithium battery energy storage systems in January and February this year was 0.500 yuan/Wh and 0.490 yuan/Wh, respectively, indicating a continuous decline in energy storage system prices. For example, in the recently opened bid for Huadian Group's 6GWh energy storage system (2h, 4h energy storage system, battery cell capacity ≥ 314Ah) centralized procurement project, the winning bid prices of 9 shortlisted candidates have been reduced to the range of 0.458 yuan/Wh-0.486 yuan/Wh.

In response to the continuously improving demand for energy storage, multiple battery companies have updated their expansion processes.

On March 20th, EVE Energy announced that it plans to issue 5 billion yuan worth of convertible bonds through the Science and Technology Innovation Board to increase its energy storage and power battery production capacity. It is reported that the fundraising will be entirely used for two core projects: the 23GWh cylindrical lithium iron phosphate energy storage power battery project and the 21GWh large cylindrical passenger car power battery project. The 23GWh cylindrical lithium iron phosphate energy storage power battery project focuses on scenarios such as power storage and ship energy storage, and is equipped with its independently developed MB56 large lithium iron battery.

It is reported that as of September last year, EVE Energy has locked in intention orders for 81GWh energy storage batteries for the next 5 years, with customers including top energy storage integrators such as Huawei Digital Energy and Sunac. In February of this year, EVE Energy also established a strategic purchase and sales relationship for battery cell products with Haibo Sichuang for the years 2025-2027, with the latter expected to purchase a total of 50GWh.

On March 15th, CATL announced its plan to increase its 40GWh battery production capacity in Dongying, Shandong. The project will be built according to the "zero carbon factory+lighthouse factory" standard. At the same time, the first project under the strategic cooperation between CATL and Dongying City, a newly built ecological energy storage pack production line with a capacity of 2GWh and an investment of 500 million yuan, is under construction.

In fact, since the beginning of this year, CATL has implemented multiple capacity planning projects. In January, CATL announced that it would invest in building a battery base with an annual production capacity of 40GWh in Songshan A area of Fuzhou Taiwan Business Investment Zone; In March, the 5th Super Factory project of Fuding Production Base was capped, with a layout of 4 new energy battery super production lines and intelligent manufacturing equipment, with an annual production capacity of 25GWh; Recently, the third and fourth phases of the Ningde Times Luoyang base project have started construction. It is reported that the first batch of battery cells at the base have been shipped out, and the second phase project is currently underway. The third and fourth phases of the project, which are scheduled to start construction this time, are scheduled to be completed and put into use by the end of October 2026.

Obviously, the confidence of Ningde Era's "massive expansion" comes from the support of its huge order volume. According to the financial report, the sales volume of CATL's energy storage battery system in 2024 was 93GWh, a year-on-year increase of 34.32%. In terms of capacity utilization, it is understood that in 2024, CATL's battery system production capacity will be 676GWh/year, with a production capacity of 516GWh and a capacity utilization rate of 76.33%.

In February, Ganfeng Lithium launched an annual production project of 10GWh batteries, covering new energy storage lithium batteries, 400000 consumer lithium batteries, and solid-state batteries. In January, the second phase of the Yuanjing Power Cangzhou Battery Super Factory project started construction. The project is planned to have an annual production capacity of 20GWh and will produce power and energy storage battery products. It is expected to be put into operation in 2026. The Lanjun New Energy 10GWh energy storage system integration project under Ruipu Lanjun also started construction in Huai'an City, Jiangsu Province in January this year.

In overseas markets, Xinwangda announced that its Thai factory has been approved for an investment of over 50 billion Thai baht (approximately 10 billion yuan), which will be used for the production of electric vehicle and energy storage system batteries, and is expected to start production within this year; Ruipu Lanjun announced that it will invest in building a battery factory in Indonesia, involving research and development, manufacturing, and sales of power batteries and energy storage batteries, with a planned annual production capacity of 8GWh in the first phase.

Top battery companies are accelerating their production capacity layout to consolidate market share, leveraging their advantages in capital, technology, scale, and brand. This also indicates that the market concentration of energy storage is still shifting towards the top. According to institutional data, in 2024, the concentration rate of the energy storage battery industry (CR10) in China's domestic energy storage market will reach 94%, and the concentration rate of the integrator industry (CR10) will reach 82%. It is expected that the integration rate of integrators will further increase to over 85% by 2025.
